A cross is a type of pipe fitting that has four openings on one connection. The fitting looks like a cross and connects four different pipes into one point. It usually has solvent-welded sockets or female-threaded ends.
Equal cross fitting is a cross with all four openings of having the same diameter and connecting to four pipes of the same diameter as well.
Crosses pipe fittings are used to connect pipes and change or control flow through a piping system. Its dimensions play an important role in deciding the strength and stability. When the same size pipes are connected and fluids flow from one direction, it will be divided into three directions. Cross-pipe fitting will be subject to great pressure problems when fluid flows in three directions and is expected to move out in one direction.
Cross pipe fittings may stress pipes as temperatures change due to their four-way nature. Therefore, cross pipes are generally not used as pipeline hydraulic components. Conversely, where thermal expansion is not an issue, cross-fittings are more advantageous.
