Socket Weld Flanges have a socket-like end, where the pipe is inserted and welded for a secure and durable joint.
These socket flanges’ connect to the end pipe with a fillet weld at the ID of the hub of the socket, as the pipe is designed to sit almost flush against the counterbore of the flange. The expansion gap between the end of the pipe and the counterbore leaves just enough space for the welder to adjust the pipe within the connection.
Socket Weld flanges widest range of application lies in pipes of small dimensions that conduct fluids at high pressures. The socket weld flange has a disadvantage in that the flange is susceptible to crevice corrosion. Corrosive solutions from the process fluid may accumulate in the gap and crevices formed between the outside surface of the pipe and the socket surface of the flange, which may cause crevice corrosion. Therefore, it is not recommended to use the socket welding flange in corrosive applications.
